The best obstacles for strength building

Obstacles for strength training

Obstacle courses offer a fantastic way to build strength, agility, and mental toughness. The best obstacles for strength building don’t only test endurance but also encourage people to challenge their muscles in new ways.

At Ninja Warrior UK, our obstacles target different muscle groups, test coordination, and require a combination of strength, power, and problem-solving skills. Here, we highlight some of the best obstacles for building strength at our indoor obstacle course in Colchester.

Rope climbs

Rope climbs are the ultimate test of upper body strength. They primarily target the arms, shoulders, and core while also engaging the legs to assist in climbing. Pulling yourself up a rope requires a powerful grip and strong biceps and forearms, while stabilising your body with your core muscles.

Rope climbs also provide a mental challenge as they require both physical and psychological endurance. Overcoming the fatigue and fear associated with climbing can improve confidence while boosting upper body strength and coordination.

Monkey bars

Monkey bars are a traditional obstacle that challenge grip and upper body strength. As you move steadily between the bars, you’ll engage your forearms, shoulders, biceps, and upper back muscles. Monkey bars force you to work on your grip and arm strength as you aim to maintain a firm hold on the bars. They also require you to engage your core for stability. Mastering the monkey bars through consistent practise will improve your overall upper body strength over time.

Wall climbs

Climbing a wall or vertical structure is a powerful test of strength and technique. Your arms and upper body provide most of the power for pulling yourself up, but you’ll also need leg strength to push off where necessary. Wall climbs challenge people to engage every part of their body and require a combination of arm strength, leg power, grip strength, and coordination. Successfully scaling a high wall boosts physical strength and mental resilience as it can be intimidating to face this challenge.

Cargo nets

Cargo nets are often used in obstacle courses to test strength, stability, and climbing technique. Navigating a cargo net engages the upper body, particularly the arms and shoulders, while the core and legs are essential for maintaining balance and stability as you move along the net. Tackling the uneven tension and positioning of the ropes requires grip strength and body coordination, challenging you to manage upper and lower body strength in an unstable environment.

Balance beams

Although balance beams primarily test stability, they also require leg strength and coordination. Moving across a narrow beam engages the legs, ankles, and core muscles, forcing you to use them to maintain balance and avoid falling. This obstacle strengthens muscles in the lower body and requires control and focus. The mental challenge of balancing successfully while under pressure adds a layer of psychological strength-building, as you must stay calm and composed while navigating the beam.
