A warped wall is a tricky yet popular obstacle on many obstacle courses and is a prominent feature on Ninja Warrior programmes around the world, including Ninja Warrior UK. At Ultimate Ninja UK, the warped wall is one of our most popular obstacles and a must-try for all who visit.
Here, we share what a warped wall is, where its name comes from, and some top tips to help you conquer it for yourself.
What does a warped wall look like?
A warped wall is a tall, curved wall that people must run up to reach the top. A warped wall can be any height, and some have two or more levels so individuals can choose the height that best suits them. This is also a handy feature for obstacle courses created for both adults and children.
Why is it called a warped wall?
The term ‘warped wall’ is used when water infiltrates the walls of a building and causes them to bend and curve. Although this is bad news for buildings, it has inspired a much-loved obstacle that challenges even the fittest of athletes.
Do you need to be strong to complete a warped wall?
Strength certainly helps when it comes to taking on a warped wall. Lower body strength will provide the power you need during the run-up to the wall and the initial climb. Once you’re high enough to grab onto the top of the wall, upper body strength will be needed to pull yourself up and over so you can stand (triumphantly) on top!
5 tips for completing the warped wall
- Wear appropriate shoes – Trainers with grip will help you run up the wall, whereas anything with smooth soles could make it tricky.
- The last step – The final step of your run-up to the warped wall should be right in front of its base to ensure your first stride takes you as far up the wall as possible.
- Focus on the top – Focusing on the top of the warped wall as you run up it will help you to maintain the correct posture. Leaning too far forward can cause you to fall into the wall, whereas leaning too far back can increase the risk of falling off.
- Use both hands – When the top of the warped wall is in reaching distance, grab it with both hands as this will help with stability. You can then use one last burst of energy to hoist yourself up.
- Be confident – As with many things, the warped wall is achievable if you put your mind to it. Believe you can do it, picture yourself at the top, and give it your best effort! It’s likely that you won’t be successful on your first try, but you’ll get a better idea of how it feels once you’ve tried it, and this will help on your next attempt.
